2-Part Fundamental Lesson -- Thomas incorporates a Head-Lock Escape into a sequence starting from standing and finishing with an Arm-Lock: If your opponent is on top and secures a basic headlock control on you (i.e. Scarf-Hold, Kesa-gatame, judo-pin, et al.), immediately find the correct posture by hiding your elbows, turning onto your side, and constructing a frame underneath their chin. Escape your hips out to the side and swing your legs around your opponent's head while using your frame to push against their jawline. Once you've successfully captured your opponent in a Head-Scissors, rock your legs downward so that you can come up on top and control the space; release your frame against their head and prepare to base-out with your hands to prevent a counter-roll. Step over into a technical-mount and rebuild your frame against their jawbone so that you may stretch away and force them to let go of the head-lock. Take advantage of their extended near-side arm by stepping across with your opposite leg over their face and falling back for an armbar submission. [2:54] Starting with your partner on the feet, have them take you down with a Double-Leg falling directly into your Closed-Guard. Establish a cross-sleeve grip and swing up for an Omoplata; connect into a Barrel-Roll Sweep before they can find their posture and take top-position with the Side Head-Lock. Your partner can now perform the aforementioned technique and counter the headlock with a reversal into the Arm-Lock.
