Passing the Open Guard
Master Fabio Gurgel finds an answer to a common Knee-Shield defense: After gaining control over your opponent's sleeve to stand up and break open their guard, hunker back down into a low squat where you can keep your opponent's leg's split by connecting your elbows to your knees. If you decided to pass by crossing your knee, look to see if you can claim an Under-Hook to finish the Knee-Slide Pass. However, if your opponent inserts their knee against your hip, don't drive forward anymore and allow them connect into a Guard-Recovery. Instead, weave your arm behind their Knee-Shield and grab onto their bottom-leg; then, make a grip behind their triceps while placing your head onto their belly. Raise your knees up off the mat so that all of your weight must be carried by your opponent. Walk around towards their head until you can easily apply a Cross-Face and take Side-Control from the Low-Tripod Pass (a.k.a. Leg-Weave Pass, et al.).
