Master Fabio Gurgel shares a variation on the Leg-Weave/Tripod Pass: When posting your hand against your opponent's torso to maintain an upright posture inside their Closed-Guard, grip onto both sides of their lapels for greater stability. However, when you stand up and break open their guard, quickly hunker back down and find a strong elbow-knee connection, but release the opposite-side lapel from your hand. Use your same-side grip to prevent your opponent from escaping away from you to create enough space to pummel their feet back inside. When you advance forward with the plan to cross your knee for the Sliding-Pass, if your opponent inserts a low Knee-Shield against your hip, encircle their thigh with your arm and make a grip onto their bottom-pant leg while also gripping behind their near-side triceps. Raise your hips into the air by balancing your weight slightly onto your head against your opponent, and begin circling around to Side-Control. If your opponent is still able to block your efforts with their Butterfly-Hook, replace your Arm-Weave Grip with your knee (Leg-Weave, Dope-Mount, Empty-Half, et al.), pummel for the Far-Side Under-Hook, lift up their near-side elbow, and bring your far-knee against their near-side hip as you shift over into the Full-Mount Position.
