Marcelo shares an important detail when attacking with the Guillotine: One way your opponent can try to escape from your Guillotine Choke is by directly extracting their head up and out from underneath your choking-arm; this can be particularly prevalent when facing strong opponents that may rely on slipperiness to enable their counter. To help mitigate these measures, it is important that when you lock up your opponent's neck, you do so by reaching your own chest over top of your opponent's head. Retain this tight proximity around your opponent's head so that if they try to back out, there is little to no space for them to do so. Resist the urge to fall back and begin extending your opponent's neck away; you may lean backwards, but not without keeping your chest and shoulder on top of the back of your opponent's head.
