Arm Trap from Back, Rear Naked Choke
Jake Shields asks Marcelo how he employs the Rear Naked Choke with the one-armed finish. Marcelo insists that he will normally resort to this variation while holding an arm trapped from the back, and with his other hand holding 1on1 wrist control. This situation is most prevalent in a fight with gloves, wherein your opponent can wing your hand closed and trap your arm from assisting with the choke. The choking hand's fingers must bite down on the opponent's shoulder blade, anchoring his arm across the throat so that if he does try to pull it off, he is unable. The choke isn't so much a blood choke, in that, the squeeze is directed on the sides of the neck to target the carotid arteries, inasmuch as it is rather, a windpipe attack, squeezing inward from the front. Claw into the back of his shoulder, and pull your elbow straight back to apply the finishing pressure.
