3 Part Technique - Escaping the Side Control starts with positioning your arms in a defensive posture that doesn't lend them to submission opportunities for your opponent. Place one forearm across his neck and the other against his waistline, followed by a bridge and hip escape. Insert your top leg into the space you've created and block his shoulder with your shin, allowing you to bring your bottom leg into play on his far hip into the Open Guard. You now have the option to shoot Closed Guard, and attack the Scissor Sweep when he stands to pass, or attacking the same sweep straight from the Open Guard. Hold the cross-collar grip and shelf your kicking leg on his leg when he kneels in your Closed Guard, or use your bottom leg to kick out his knee from the Open Guard. Which submission you follow up with in the mount depends on his reaction; if he bridges and spins away, let him, and take his back for the Rear Naked Choke. If he pushes your chest away with extended arms, attack with the Armbar from Mount.
