Balloon Sweep from Open Guard, Tripod Sweep from Open Guard
3 Part Technique - Your opponent doesn't break your Closed Guard; you release it. That's the attitude and protocol you should abide by when your opponent stands and is close to uncrossing your ankles. Don't let him feel like he's in control of the position, release your guard on your own terms and quickly move to secure Open Guard. Use your foot on his hip to gauge his weight distribution, and choose your sweep accordingly. If his weight is forward, apply the Balloon Sweep. If his weight is pulling back, trip him backwards with the Tripod Sweep. If his ankle is out of range for the traditional Tripod Sweep, switch for a cross sleeve grip and grab onto his other ankle. Reap behind his leg with your hook and follow him on top to establish the sweep.
