Circling Pass vs Open Guard, Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Drill - Grabbing your heel is a common and effective tactic used by your opponent when you stand against his Open or Closed Guard. That is why you will need to be ready to counter it should he try to use it against you. Instinctively, you will want to pull your heel backward, but this will only help his Tripod or Ankle Pull Sweep. Instead, counter-intuitively kick forward, into the space below his armpit, and then circle back your foot free. Learning this skill will come in handy and surprise an opponent who isn't ready to miss this grip.
