Jon and Marcelo discuss several aspects of the Arm Trap from Back with Seatbelt Control for the Rear Naked Choke. If you feel as if you lack the flexibility and dexterity to successfully incorporate the Arm Trap into your game, you may need to simply adjust your position and slide a bit higher up on your opponent's back. There are several ways to transfer his arm underneath your hook, but Marcelo generally prefers to stomp his heel downward forcefully to get the job done. If you feel like you cannot push his arm low enough with your arm still, this is where the Crossed Arm Control comes into play. Since your bottom hand is under his armpit, it will easily be able to push the arm much lower than your other hand can. Getting the trap will be worthless if you can't maintain it; make sure to flex your toes so your heel is firmly digging into his side. The Arm Trap with the Back Hooks is an invaluable tool in Marcelo's arsenal, which is a major reason why he chooses to avoid using the Anaconda to hold the back. Locking the figure-four doesn't allow you to actively win the hand-fighting battle, and switching sides becomes problematic if your opponent rolls. Not to mention, if you're fighting someone who is "athletically chubby", there's a good chance you won't even be able to use the Anaconda. Marcelo quickly recognized these facts, and as a result, has discarded this move from his game.
