Over Under Pass vs Half Guard, Turning Pass vs Half Guard
Marcelo and his first-ever black belt, Josh Waitzkin, discuss how to comfortably pass the Half Guard when the opponent threatens the safety of your knee joint by cranking your ankle outward. Firstly, establish the position as normally specified, with the Over/Under Control, drag his hips to the side, and place your foot on top of his knee. If you can't seem to bring his hip to the mat, use your free foot to probe whatever kind of impedance he locked around your leg and clear it off. It is important to give your leg some structural integrity as you try to free your knee; don't let it lay limp or else you could easily fall prey to injurious torques. However, if you still feel your knee is in danger before you can cut the half, turn onto your outside, as in the Turning Pass with the Reverse Underhook, but maintain the Over/Under Control. This configuration will allow you to kick your knee free without the risk of the Leite-esque style sweep. However, don't always rely on this form of half guard pass because it offers your opponent an opportunity to escape with a strong bridge or hook sweep.
