3 Part Technique - In part one of the Lesson, Marcelo teaches his class the importance of proper Hand Fighting from Butterfly for the Single Leg Takedown. One should always attempt to preface the sweep by first clearing a pathway to the leg with control over the opponent's wrists. If he is reluctant to let you control his hands, utilize either doubled wrist control or a 2on1 to dominate the battle. If he tries to escape from your 2on1 by posting his free hand on your body, use his own arm to knock away his post and create an opening for the Single. In part two, Marcelo reiterates the importance of addressing and removing the opponent's hand before engaging the legs. Whether for the Single, or entry into 1Leg X, one must knock away anything that can get in between and interfere with the attack; otherwise, you jeopardize the likelihood of success and waste time and energy. This may also involve swatting away his hands as they can push you away if you cannot gain control over his wrists beforehand. Only move forward after taking away the hands, and if you can't stand up, pull him into guard for the sweep. Also, and lastly, remember to push the pace; believe he is more tired than you are.
