Hand Fighting from Butterfly, 2on1 Control from Butterfly, Guard Recovery vs Toreando Pass, Collar and Wrist Control from Butterfly Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo insists on his students connecting a recovery with a follow-up sweep or submission: [I] Holding 2on1 Control affords one with the ability to retain his or her guard after an opponent grabs a leg and tries to pass; you will always have at least one leg available to catch his trailing leg in Half Guard or with a Butterfly Hook. Subsequently, whatever sweep you opt for afterward will depend upon which controls you maintain throughout the retention, e.g. recovering with Collar & Sleeve Control will lead directly into a Short Hook Sweep. [II] Complement your technique by also incorporating a submission off of your control. Oftentimes, defending the sweep will leave one susceptible to a submission, and vice versa. For example, if you recovery back your Butterfly Guard using Cross Collar & Sleeve Control, if the opponent widens his base to defend the sweep, he may leave his neck open for a Loop Choke.
