4 Part Lesson — Marcelo breaks down the essential points of defending against the Spider Guard: [I] If your opponent plays Spider Guard with a Stirrup & Lasso against your arms, you must break his grips on your sleeves to advance in position; roll your wrist and grip the outside of his knee against the lasso, and inch around with your fingers until his grip weakens for the break. If his shin is deep against your arm, posture straight up and yank some slack out of grip before winding around his knee. Don't let him grab your sleeve again; retract your hand from his reach before he can re-grip. If you can't smack his other hand off your biceps with your free hand, quickly grab his sleeve and rip your arm back to clear his holds. [II] If you cannot posture up to break the Lasso, try breaking the Stirrup first; take his foot off your biceps by jamming your knee behind his leg and then step on his arm to break the sleeve grip. Quickly, help your other hand to break the Lasso before he can re-grip. Try to keep your foot stepping on his arm to give yourself enough time to double-up for the break. [III] If you can hit or grab his grip against the Lasso after you free your other arm from the Stirrup, walk back and tuck his foot under your hips as you walk back and sit on his leg. Use your weight against his leg to break his grip; grab his hands to avoid letting him regain his grips again after all of your work. [IV] Upon resetting the position, snag his ankles and vault over his feet, forcing him to play Butterfly rather than Spider. Work your Underhook series to pass his guard. If he plays his open guard with his feet up, dive in for Double-Unders to pass or take his back. If his legs are too strong to fight, dive down and grab double lapels while keeping tight and drive your knee down over one of his legs to avoid the Spider Guard, forcing Half.
