3 Part Lesson — Marcelo reacts to a strong Collar Grip from Standing: [I] If you can swat away your opponent's hand as he reaches for your lapel and before he can settle his grip, it is ideal. If he makes the grip, smack it off from the inside on his wrist and also from the outside of his knuckles; it is important to deliver both of these opposing energies with some simultaneity and not just consecutively. [II] If the Grip Break is unsuccessful, try again by grabbing his sleeve and/or wrist with both hands and yanking off his hand as you throw your body backward in the opposite direction. If this doesn't work, switch plans entirely by latching onto his jacket with your own grips. Ready your base and prepare for movement until you can readdress his grip for the break. [III] If while attached with your grips, you sense your opponent is planning to throw you with a big attack, sacrifice the standing position by pulling guard immediately into an attack.
