2 Part Lesson — Marcelo sweeps from Butterfly Guard: [I] Win dominant control over the position through the use of deliberate hand-fighting; either secure a grip on your opponent's wrist from above or below his hand and augment your hold by placing a backstop behind his elbow for 2on1 Control. When your opponent reels back to defend the 2on1, use this window of opportunity to close the distance and gain either Double Underhooks, Over/Under Control, or Collar & Elbow Control. Now, with even greater control over your opponent's upper body and his ability to post in defense of reversal, execute a Hook Sweep. [II] If you pummel for Double Underhooks, use them to draw the opponent's weight on top of your Butterfly Hooks to lift him or her into the air; while suspended in mid-air, transition from the Butterfly Guard to an improved guard of your choice, e.g. X-Guard or 1Leg-X or maybe even a Heelhook depending on your particular situation.
