2 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches us how to early and late counters to the Guillotine from Closed Guard: [I] If your opponent catches your head into a Guillotine from Closed Guard by removing your post and off-balancing you with a Hip Bump (Belt) Sweep, immediately shrug your shoulders, tuck your chin, drive forward onto your toes, and begin peeling his hands away from your neck. Capture his shoulder if you feel him try to raise his elbow for the Marcelotine variation. [II] If your opponent is able to raise his forearm atop your shoulder for the High Elbow Variant of the Guillotine Choke finish, bail to the side to escape; don't pull him on top into Mount, but push his knees down your legs and try to recover Side Control. Don't let him go flat again or else you risk his elbow escaping back onto your shoulder; keep low and heavy on his side and look to capture his head with a Cross-Face to prevent the High-Elbow.
