3 Part Lesson — Marcelo revisits the N/S-Choke and adds a new nuance: [I] Displeased with the collective low percentage of attempts for the North/South Choke during training, Marcelo encourages his students to make a better try at executing the strangle. Starting from the North/South Position, keep your opponent's arms at bay against his sides and wait for the opportunity to capture the near-side of his neck with your lat muscle. Splay your legs wide for base and clasp your hands together using a thumb-less Gable-Grip. [II] The pressure from the choke comes from dropping the shoulder onto the throat. Ask your partner to help you discern whether your tap-outs are from the pain of a Neck Crank, or from onset of unconsciousness due to the strangulation. Aim to make your finish a pure blood choke rather than simply accepting pain compliance. [III] You can wrap your arm around your opponent's head after you land on his neck; this seemingly out of order sequence can be beneficial against opponents who are ready to defend by looking inside. Use your free arm to roll his torso over your hand as you dig underneath his head and form the finishing grip.
