Marcelo, Flo, Matheus, and Scott help demonstrate a commonplace scenario in a crowded mat-space. Always be mindful of your surroundings. Developing an awareness for what's happening around you while you roll is not only important for you and your partner's safety, but also for keeping sharp during a match. It can help remind you to check the time, score, and boundary when out on the mat in a tournament. Knowing where the edge is can be crucial part of your or your opponent's tactics, so you have to practice paying attention to things besides technique. There is no deference based on rank while sparring at the Marcelo Garcia Academy; all pairs on the mat are to be treated equally, regardless of the intensity or perceived importance of the roll. Safety is the number one priority in concern; if you have the ability to prevent you partner from getting hit by accident, you must disengage and reset to protect him or her. Even though your leg is more durable than your head, don't leave yourself vulnerable to the possibility of an injurious collision. Allow your leg to give with slack rather than keeping it rigid -thus more breakable.
