3 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches the importance behind the concept of off-balancing the opponent: [I] Physically shake your opponent to disrupt his timing, comfort, and sense of direction, whenever you wish to advance in position and progress toward points or the finish. For example, if you are close to scoring a pass or taking the back from a bodylock, shake your opponent before moving to control his head. [II] If your head is in front of his chest, use the Underhook to pin him flat; if your head is behind, smack your arm over his shoulder for Head & Arm Control aka Katagatame, Side Choke, Arm Triangle, et cetera. If you stabilize the position for the pass, look to either pummel an Underhook or pop up to Knee-On-Belly. [III] The key idea here isn't any particular set or sequence of movements, but rather the principle of distracting your opponent from your true intentions and clearing an easier path toward your goals.
