5 Part Lesson — Marcelo gets himself out of trouble and resets from a bad imposition: [I] You want to give yourself the option of breaking out of your opponent's guard for many reasons; perhaps, you're not ready to attack, or you're stuck, or guessing what to do next, or you're too busy formulating a plan forward, et cetera. Sometimes your opponent will invite you into his game, and you might have an answer ready by way of submission or pass. However, if you are inserted into a position and want to keep safe without having to resort to disengagement, find a way to clear the opponent's control. If you are inside DLR-Guard, pop off the hook by straightening out your lead leg, turn your body inward and then raise your knee up, lifting your foot out of the opponent's ankle grip. [II] If they are using an Underhook to attach to your leg, try stepping on their arm with your free foot before pulling up and out. Nogi training will help you develop this skill because it is easier to take advantage of slipperyness. Remain alert after you clear the control because your opponent will chase you to connect another attack. If the DLR-Hook goes deep to your trailing leg, stuff the foot down and high-step over top of his or her leg. Immediately, point your lead knee ot the outside to avoid a strong DLR-Hook again. [III] If your opponent sits up onto a Single, extract your knee and pop your foot away from the opponent's arms. Turn your knee away if you have to, but watch out for a followup. It's better to raise your leg up vertically to answer back with pressure afterward. [IV] If your opponent dives under for Deep Half, thrust over to the opposite side into the (Deep) Reverse Half Guard. Turn inward and post on the opponent's shoulders to avoid a back attack; if they try to turn over and come up on top, yank out your leg back to neutral. Slow them down by staying in the fight and facing them down with posts after you yank free. [V] If you cut your knee across when they dive deep under, push their arm off of your trail-leg and backstep over to the other side. If they follow you and come up, get ready to pull out your leg back to standing again.
