1 Part Lesson — Marcelo benefits in Gi from training No-Gi: When passing in no-gi, success in stabilizing the top position after you clear your opponent's legs is largely predicated on your ability to encircle your arms around his or her torso, controlling with some combination of head and arm control (typically, Far-Side-Underhook & Near-Side Cross-Face). When your opponent frames against your shoulders and builds a defensive posture on bottom, close the distance against their widened frames by deflecting their posts on your body; you can duck your head through, tilt your chest, twist at the waist, or any movement that allows you to continue facing down over the opponent's upper body and close the gap between your hands making a grip. Swatting off an arm out of your way can be helpful; however, you can over-rotate your shoulders and separate yourself from a given targeted locking mechanic to consolidate your pass. If you do manage to over-spin in the process of clearing the frames, compensate by running toward the North-South Position. If you can use this style of passing while wearing the gi, you can trade speed for stength, and not have to rely on pulling the clothes to keep close enough to control the top position from a pass.
