2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo counters the Knee-Cut with a Sit-Up Single-Leg: If your opponent splits your Butterfly guard with his or her lead leg and places your back flat on the mat, utilize your Butterfly hook to manipulate the opponent's base. Oftentimes, you can kick upwards and force the opponent to post overhead, leading to an easy Single-Leg. However, if he or she feels more neutrally balanced in the Knee-Cut Position, place your foot on the far-knee and push the weight off of you so you can sit upright. If you kick your leg too hard, you might disconnect and ruin your chance to attack. You may post your hand behind to help come up, but against stiffer competition, you will need to use your hand to clear resistance and control the Single. [03:03] If your opponent meddles with your Butterfly Hook, you must use your outside leg to help swing upright while you work to free your leg; integrate your free hand to help break the opponent's control over your leg so you can finish the sweep.
