1 Part Lesson -- Marcelo reviews how to counter the Take-Up Sweep from X-Guard: A great exercise for working on how to sweep from a Deep-Half or X-Guard (Split-Guard, Y-Guard, Curu-Curu, 70/30, et al.) is to practice rocking upright from your back with your head tall and not using your hands to post on the mat. This particular sweep by hoisting your opponent's leg on your shoulder and rising up off the ground goes by many different monikers; Joga-fora-no-Lixo (BJJ), Moguri (Kosen Judo), Treetop Single (Wrestling), X-Guard Takedown (MGinAction's tag). If you fail to keep your head up, it is easier for your opponent to escape his or her leg and prevent the sweep. If you are on the receiving end of this sweep when done well, your only chance of countering the move is to rise faster and slip your leg free. Accomplish this by posting on your opponent's head and peeling away the grip from around your shin.
