5 Part Lesson -- Marcelo systematically defends attacks from the Omoplata: If your opponent attacks you with an Omoplata, grab onto their free foot to prevent them from hooking elsewhere and making the submission attempt worse. Stand up and find a strong base while keeping your trapped arm bent inside the Omoplata. Shake your opponent until you can safely free your elbow out of the lock. Don't straighten your arm until your elbow is clear otherwise you could be armbarred. Once free, immediately attack your opponent while they are scrambling to recover from the failed Omoplata attempt. [04:38] If you cannot stand in base with posture, don't stay down and let your opponent begin to climb up your back with the Omoplata still locked. Keep your near-leg away from your opponent's reach and jump over to the opposite side. Land on your feet so that you can immediately drive into your opponent and keep the top position. Face belly down as you spin around with your arm still trapped between your opponent's legs. [08:50] Have your partner work hard to turn over onto their knees with the Omoplata for the sweep. Land quickly to the other side and work to keep yourself on top by sprawling and driving with your feet. Collect your opponent's head in a makeshift cradle to help pin them down and prevent them from turning over. [11:37] If your opponent grabs your near-leg, use your free foot to kick their grip off of your pants and quickly hop over to the opposite side. Make a grip with your arm tapped in the Omoplata so that your opponent cannot try to hyperextend your arm. [16:15] When breaking the grip on your pants, open your knee up and use your free leg to kick in front rather than behind your trapped leg.
