North South Choke
Marcelo and Bryan talk about energy conversation and developing exteroceptive awareness: When applying a North/South Choke while you and your opponent are wearing kimono tops, there is a nonnegligible probability that the gi will hinder your success if it happens to bunch up around their neck and obstruct your finishing compression. After enough practice without the gi first, then some more with the gi on, you will start to understand when you have a clean finish before you even begin squeezing. If you realize the choke isn't quite there, back off of the move and reset yourself back into the North/South Position without attaching to their head or neck. Wait for another chance to land back down onto their neck, hopefully readjusting the jacket material out of the way. However, sometimes it is possible to finish an opponent even when you feel too much cloth inside your choke; this happens when the collar presses against your opponent's neck as opposed to their jaw. Despite this chance, one's best bet is often to simply reset and try again.
