3 Part Technique - Successful hook sweeps require a top control to torque the opponent's upper body. Collar and Elbow Control is a strong substitute if you cannot secure 2on1 or Over Under Control. When the opponent posts his weight on a knee, kicking it out will sweep or cause an exposing reaction. Premeditate the opponent's reaction of coming back, because he will commonly leave his neck exposed to being Guillotined.

I don't think it matters what side you use if you're rolling with someone less skilled than you, but if you're competing with someone of similar level, you will find a need to specialize in one side for some techniques as Marcelo says. This is especially true of attacks which require a lot of precision and calibration to pull off. North-south and guillotine chokes are a good example of this; everyone has a different neck and shoulder structure and defends differently. Calibrating one side to submit a variety of people of the same skill level is very time consuming, and calibrating both sides is not time efficient (especially since there are other techniques to practice!). For techniques that don't require as much precision, such as passes and sweeps, I think there's a lot of value in training both sides.

Marcelo prefers to choke with his dominant arm (right), so he tries to force his opponent into situations that will feed into attacks from there.  As he shows here, he could choose to guillotine with his left arm when he sweeps his opponent to his left and they recover; instead, he takes the small extra step of passing their head to the right.  I can only guess that from his experience this sacrifice of time is small in return for placing their head on the side of his most powerful choking arm.  He does the same thing with the North South choke and the RNC/crucifix attacks from what I've seen.

Wait, why does Marecelo only do the guillotine from one side?  Or is he just saying that you should start with one side because of natural preferences, but ultimately develop it for both sides?
