2 Part Technique - It is paramount that you protect your legs from controls and grips while playing butterfly guard. Drape your arms over your legs to help block access to your gi pants while your hands are ready to defend against ankle grips. Every time you feel the opponent reach for your ankles, knock his hands away or intercept them and gain control over his wrists. In the event that he does grab your pants at the knees, use your elbows to chop the grips off. If the opponent grabs your ankles lifting your hips off of the mat, scoot backwards and kick your legs free with outward circles.

I have to focus on little details like this. It's a very important lesson. I wouldn't have to spend time and energy breaking strong grips if I don't let them get the grip in the first place.
