Marcelo, Will, and Jon discuss options for passing an opponent's half guard with cross underhook control. First and foremost, the success of the position stems from maintaining a high grip on his back, which of course slightly favors the gi in terms of success rate. Regardless of which leg you have trapped in his half guard, top leg for Turned and bottom leg for Back-Step, you kick your leg free just the same and immediately run for North South. If you dilly-dally after the pass, your opponent has the chance to move his head out of the way and recover his guard back. There is strong possibility that your opponent will turn onto his knees to avoid getting passed. When this happens, prepare to take his exposed back with the Seatbelt Control. Either way, you're advancing your position and getting one step closer to finding the submission.
