2 Part Lesson — Marcelo preemptively defends against his opponent entering into Lapel-Guard(s): [I] Pay attention to cues and tells of your opponent's intentions; e.g. if he or she slaps your lapel out from your belt while standing, there is a good chance that they will try to entangle you with your jacket once on the ground. If the opponent does manage to find a grip on the tail of your kimono, prevent them from making grip switches by grabbing onto their sleeve. Use the grip on the sleeve to help stand up out of Closed Guard. Keep your grip taut to prevent the opponent from threading the tail between your legs for Lapeloplata, Worm Guard, Squid Guard, or any of the Lapel Guard Variations. [II] The opponent doesn't have to wait for you to stand up before entangling you with the lapel, he or she may opt to use it to wrap you up directly from the Closed Guard. As before, control the sleeve of the hand grabbing your tail and provide resistance when he or she tries to weaving the lapel around your body.
