Hand Fighting from Side Control
4 Part Lesson -- Marcelo evades the completion of his opponent's pass: If your opponent bypasses your guard and goes to pin down your upper body, block them from securing control over your head. Pummel your arm inside and build a frame so that you can hip escape. Insert your knees inside and then push your opponent off of you with your feet. If you cannot block the nearside arm, turn away and defend against the far-side arm. The goal is to prevent your opponent from enclosing around your shoulders with a complete link. If you can control the arm, clear it for a Hip Roll Escape. If you can pummel both Underhooks to one side, jack your opponent overhead and scoot out the back door like a ghost. [06:20] If your opponent tries to score a pass by holding your hips down, push them down towards your feet as you scoot and slither away from the hold-down. [11:34] If your opponent runs North/South and secures Double Reverse Underhooks, place both of your arms on one side of the opponent's body and slide yourself out from underneath while escaping your hips. [15:56] When your opponent surprises you with a quick pass, respond back with a recovery that doesn't take too long. The longer you wait, the greater chance your opponent has to score points or transition to a better move.
