2 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches what to do when your opponent begins to pass your Seated Guard with respect to three different ranges: [I] If your opponent latches onto your collar to knock you flat on your back for a pass, immediately address his grip and remove it with both hands. You may need to assist your break by utilizing your feet to push off of his chest, shoulders, or hips, depending on what is readily available. [II] If the opponent begins his attempt to establish Side Control, he is too close and you must abandon the grip break in order to frame against his body with your extended arms. You won't be able to hold him off with your hands forever, but at the very least the posts will buy you enough time to incorporate your legs back into the picture and push him away back to safety. [III] If the opponent is too close for your feet to reach his body, turn onto your side and resort to the Hip Roll Escape.
