How to Train with Lower Belts
Marcelo insists that his students of various rank expand their match-ups to include rolls against those with less skill or strength than themselves. It is important to make the most out of your time on the mat, and you cannot always expect yourself to be evenly matched in ability with your training partner. Find a way to expose yourself to elements of your opponent's game that you need to work on to refine your technique during sparring. Purposefully, manipulate your opponent in ways in which you can consciously ingrain into your memory the specifics behind your decision-making and attacks. Rather than finishing a technique as quickly as possible, work to expand your repertoire of entries or follow-ups. Let your partner move around enough so that you can control their possibilities and allow yourself to reorient towards the particular set of options and choices afforded from a more dynamic situation.
