Underhook & Head Control vs Half Guard, Knee Slide Pass vs Half Guard, Monoplata vs Side Control
3 Part Technique - Seeking the underhook while held in your opponent's Half Guard can be problematic, especially when he is committed to preventing you from establishing upper body control for a pass. This scenario is a prime example of when the best solution may be to back away, adjust your elevation of attack, and pass the Half without an underhook. This could require you to wiggle and jostle your knee free before cutting across in a Knee Slide Pass. Once outside, you will still need to gain an underhook to adequately pin him down for the points; drop your weight on his arm and shoulder until you can frame up enough to pummel for the underhook. There is however, an opportunity to attack a submission rather than claim the underhook: as the opponent turns onto his side with his own underhook, mount over his body, trapping his arm onto your lap. From here, you can apply a Monoplata by crossing the foot over his face and falling back to attack a shoulderlock, or you could very well sit down off to the side for the Spiral Armbar.
