2 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches one of his favorite armbar finishes, The Farside Armbar from Side Control: [I] Typically, the Farside Armbar requires you to collect the far underhook and maintain tight connection throughout the movement. Marcelo accomplishes this by luring his opponent into opening up space for the underhook with the Knee-On-Belly; when his opponent attempts to push off the knee from his stomach, pummel underneath his armpit and pull him onto his side with both hands. Whether you leave your shin touching his belly or place both knees on the mat, spin around his head until you are nearly ready to sit back with his arm on the farside. Marcelo's next step is a rather unique approach to armlock entry: Classically, the shin is wedged against the back as the lock is placed. Marcelo rather, takes the opportunity to whip his leg over the body before landing in the armlock position for a more secure armbar. [II] In the event that your opponent is wise to the farside threat and he blocks you from running around with his nearside-hand, either drop your shin onto his arm and windshield wipe back over the top of it, or if both of your knees are on the ground, simply lift up your foot and hook on top of his arm with your instep, thus allowing a clear pathway to the finish.
