2 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains a series of techniques unique to jiu-jitsu alone; grip-fighting for wrestling-style takedowns: [I] A well placed collar grip from standing can complement your plan to attack the opponent's legs as it can readily break his posture; however, the collar grip leaves the opponent free to use his arm against you by attacking your legs too with a Single. To prevent this possibility, control the opponent's sleeve with your other hand, especially if he makes a grip on your sleeve first, and sprawl your leg free in conjunction with an extension of your collar grip to evade his attack. Immediately, look to follow up your counter by dropping down on his leg for a takedown, e.g. an Ankle Pick. [II] If the opponent manages to pick up your leg, do not let him connect his hands together. Maintain your grips and forcefully put your foot back down on the mat as you push him away.
