2 Part Technique - The opponent might put all of his effort into escaping once you passed his guard, so use the Underhook and Head Control to stabilize the Side Control. This control is only good for holding the opponent in place, not for advancing in position or finding submissions. Once you begin to slowly unlock your Underhook and Head Control, it is common for the opponent to escape using a strong Underhook Bridge. Counter the bridge by stepping over. There will be 2 options from this situation, depending on how the opponent reacts. He might immediately bring his back to the mat, which will just give you the mount. The second option is if you can control the arm before he retreats, you will have the Spiral Armbar instead. If the opponent Underhooks lower around your leg, pull up at his elbow to create space to step over.
