North South Choke from Side Control
2 Part Technique - It's common for the opponent to defend submissions by holding his arms in tight. Use your chest to smear away the opponent's closest defending arm. Drop your weight on his remaining arm using your forearm to open up the opponent's neck for the North South Choke. Immediately wrap your arm around the opponent's neck, combined with switching your hips to land your ribs on the side of his head to secure the choke. Do not pause in your transition of running parallel and sprawling your hips back, because the opponent can bridge and reverse the position. Even if you did the techniques correct, the opponent could of had the accurate timing to sink his chin under your choking shoulder to defend the submission. If you squeeze his jaw and face while trying to submit him, the traumatic experience will cause the opponent to never open his neck again. Instead, let go of the choke so you do not waste energy and quickly reapply it again. Chances are in your favor the opponent will be comfortable enough to open his neck. If the opponent looks towards you before you attempt the choke, get your chest under his shoulder and roll him to the side. The opponent's head and neck will now be at the angle for the North South Choke, even if the body is in a different position.
