3 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains a simple facet of his X-Guard system: [I] Enter into the X-Guard off of a countered Hook Sweep attempt when your opponent posts his leg out, creating space underneath his base for you to fill with the position. Capture his nearest sleeve and feed it to the hand of your arm that is underhooking his lead leg. If you can use your hooks and grips to pull him close, loading up his weight, knock him backwards and pick up both ankles to take the top. [II] If your opponent is reeling away from your position and taking weight off of your chest, extend your hooks and sit up to your feet for a Tree-Top Single Takedown. Don't take your feet off of the trail leg until you are ready to recompose your base. If he grabs your pants, lay back down into the position and work off his grip. [III] Don't let the momentum of your own takedown carry you into a counter-sweep or leg attack. Land heavily and try to spread out your weight upon impact to keep the top position for the sweep.
