2 Part Lesson — Marcelo shows how a good Closed Guard defense oftentimes results in an opportunity for an attack: [I] Standing to break open the Closed Guard is the best option to advance your position the fastest, however you will leave yourself vulnerable to trips and sweeps. Luckily, if you fall to the side of your free hand posting behind, you can recover back to the top position or even break away from the Full Scissors Hold. Keep in mind that this is a risky proposition, as the stakes are quite high; if you happen to fail at the recovery or escape, you can find yourself 6 whole points behind in score from the resultant Sweep to Full Mount. [II] Your opponent will more than likely try to pull you into the Triangle by grabbing the sleeve of the arm you use to keep him or her from sitting up into Mount. Before you even sense this danger, consider making a grip lower on your opponent's lapel to help increase the distance from the locked-on Triangle attack. Once you recover back your base, i.e. free your foot from his grips, seize hold of his pants by the knee to help keep his legs from ensnaring around your waist or shoulder.
