Too many people on that mat for stand up sparring.  People are gonna get hurt.
If you have more space, it's great to start standing, since all fights start on the feet.

I'm a blue belt so take this how you will but a few things. 1) I think the concern is towards lower belts who may not develop a sound standing game, and who rely too much on pulling guard or conceding bottom. This is Marcelo Garcia we're talking about, so that's a non issue. 2) Maybe they're focusing more on actual Jiu Jitsu, then their Judo/Wrestling, working their attacks/defenses from bottom? 3) Standing is alittle more aggressive and I think people are more prone to injury, so maybe they're not treating they're sparring like its ADCC.

I often notice that when Marcelo is rolling with a higher level belt they will both start on the knees and sometimes contest this position for some time, before one will fall back to guard. It is not so much in this video but in other ones.

My understanding is that when both people are fighting from the knees this does not represent a common or realistic scenario.  In class Before training the instructor will often tell us Not to start  in this position, but rather that one person play guard.

Any comments ? Thanks!
