2 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches how to maintain Seated Butterfly Guard against incoming pressure: [I] Shrug your shoulders to protect your neck as you lean forward, finding an angle that structurally accommodates your opponent's forward advance. Activate your core muscles to help crunch inward if your opponent tries to knock you backward by shoving your shoulders. Use your hands to help clear off any ties to your neck; fight for inside control and prevent your opponent from dictating the pace. [II] If your opponent feeds his knee inside your space, post on his shank and scoot any from his lead step. You do not have to accept the occupancy of his or her lead leg inside your Seated Guard (Open Single/Half) if the position is not on your terms. If you are not ready to attack his leg, push away and make space before things go further. Have your partner develop a rhythm of shoving your shoulders and stepping inside as you clear ties and scuttle back.
