3 Part Lesson — Marcelo counters the Deep Half Guard: [I] If you cannot perform the Leg-Over Pass against the Deep Half because your weight is distributed too much on your knee by the opponent's shoulder, execute a Sit-Over transition by grabbing the opponent's triceps and cutting your knee across to the opposite side into the Reverse (Deep) Half. Look for a Reverse Underhook on the Far-Side or Cross-Face the opponent's head to hold the top position for a Back-Step Pass. If you don't control the head after you free your leg, run North-South to control the position. [II] If you cannot readily control the head for the Back-Step Pass, you can dig under the Near-Side for an Underhook and "Do-Si-Do" back over to the original side for Double Underhooks or the Over-Under Pass. [III] If the opponent is pushing away from the Back-Step Position, keep them from moving too far by latching onto the Near-Side Collar; you can use this to finish the Back-Step Pass or return to the front for another attack.
