2 Part Lesson — Marcelo discusses momentum in relation to pulling X-Guard: If you can pull guard from standing, utilize the falling energy to help load your opponent up onto your hooks for a powerful lift. Pop the opponent up like a fork-lift and catch his or her leg onto your shoulder for Partial X-Guard (i.e., without the addition of an inverted butterfly hook for the criss-cross pattern typical of the standard X-Guard position; esoterically, aka Velvet-Guard). You can sweep directly into the Joga-fora-no-Lixo Sweep (Tree-Top Single Leg Pick-Up & Dump) or insert your second hook for a transition to your X-Guard attacks. If your opponent is heavy, you can raise him or her up and let their leg slide down to your side for Single-Leg X. [04:21] If your opponent smashes your knees to the side while you try to execute the Hook Lift, quickly affirm your knee against the hip as a Reverse Butterfly Hook and try again with even more determination. Grab onto the opponent's pants and pull the leg into your One-Legged X-Guard Position.
