Breaking the Standing Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo deals with the Standing Closed Guard: If your opponent jumps for Closed Guard after you've established Collar & Elbow Control, adjust your base and don't lean backwards. Leaning slightly forward will prevent your opponent from releasing his or her Closed Guard directly into a Takedown. Use a Collar Grip to help pull the opponent away from the floor and solidify an Underhook. Next, make a grip on the inside of the pants and push until the ankles uncross. When the opponent begins to fall, drive your knee over top of his or her thigh to secure the Half Guard with an Underhook. [06:38] If your opponent begins stretching your underhooking arm, pummel out of the control or fall down to the mat. If you can pass the opposite side lapel around the opponent's back and feed it into the hand of your Underhook, you can hold the position and work as previously mentioned.
