Mixing It Up 2
1 Part Lesson -- Marcelo talks about what to do when your Tokuiwaza (favorite techniques) consistently fails during a match: If your favorite pass for example, is defended by your opponent, immediately try an attack on the opposite side. If this doesn't work, go back to the original side and try a different, new pass. If this fails too, once again, go back to the other side and try another technique. If all of these attempts are stopped, go back to whichever pass worked best and got you closer to success. Sometimes stubbornness will help fix when your preferred technique fails the first time around; however, you should be prepared to change up your attack and analyze a better approach rather than insist on the same move. When you select an alternative technique, make sure it's one that won't get in you trouble if it blocked. You do not want to be stuck passing over and over again while losing time and energy. E.g., transitioning into 50/50 may not be a good option in the gi if you need to break out quickly and try something new before the match ends.
