Marcelo and Yuta-san discuss tactics regarding a standing opponent who disengages from Hand-Fighting against the Seated/Butterfly Guard. There exists a delicate interplay between remaining safe against a surprise attack and opening yourself up to advance position and chase down your opponent for control. If your opponent backs away slowly, scoot forward cautiously with both hands up to defend. If your opponent backs away quickly, hop forward to close the distance. You can make a connection with your Butterfly-Hooks on the opponent's feet, or even make a grip on the belt. The idea is to disrupt the opponent's balance, break his or her stance, and disconnect one's base with a Hook-Lift. The more confident you are in reading your opponent's intentions will allow you to better adjust how much you are willing to risk on your part to force the pace of the match. If your opponent initiates forward, be prepared to use the momentum to play into your game.
