1 Part Lesson -- Paul teaches several responses to pass a defensive Open Guard: If you encounter your opponent's Frames (arms posting out) against your upper body after clearing his or her legs, you can react in a few different ways; (i) you can continue running through towards the North/South Postion (Marcelo's primary preference). (ii) You can rewind the opponent's hips and transition backwards, redirecting the opponent's legs away from a guard recovery. Lastly, (iii) you can opt to transition directly to Knee-on-Belly. Seek an Underhook to hold the opponent down, but release your knee from the opponent's belly so that you don't commit too much of your weight over top. Clean up the opponent's nearside arm to prevent it from framing against your hip and helping start an escape.
