Marcelo on Flying Submissions
Jon inquires Marcelo about his opinion on the use of jumping or flying attacks starting from the feet against an opponent, that require you to sacrifice your base and aim your legs towards a potential choke or lock. Marcelo's game comes from a very pragmatic and utilitarian approach to training. Although these flying submissions (e.g. Flying Armbar, Leg Scissors, et al.) may prove effective and are spectacularly crowd-pleasing, they are too difficult to perform safely and regularly against likable training partners in a live scenario. Too often, when attempting to cleanly land the technique, a slight miscalculation on your part or a small perturbing maneuver made by your partner will set you off-course. It is sometimes better to keep things simple, despite the allure and appeal of flashy, leaping attacks.
