Counter vs Under-Hook from Side Control, Taking the Back vs Single Leg
Advanced Lesson Part 3 of 3 -- Marcelo explains his preference when his opponent escapes from the opposite side: After pinning someone down in a position, whether it be Side Control or the Front Head-Lock Position, you can expect them to immediately escape when given the space and opportunity to do so. As long as you have a plan to advance your position, e.g. taking their back, you can release your opponent with control and let them help by giving you a more dominant place to attack. If your opponent happens to escape out from the bottom of your Side-Mount by turning themselves over with an Under-Hook, you must be prepared to maintain control and improve your positioning. If however, your opponent does so on a side you are not quite comfortable dealing with the same way you would on the other side, you must still be able to deploy an effective option. Whenever someone attempts to escape from Marcelo with an Under-Hook on his weak-side, he does not choose the transition to Front Head-Lock. Instead, he relies on switching to the opposite side for his preferred Seat-Belt Control. He manages this by running around past North/South while keeping weight on his opponent's bottom arm. Typically, the opponent's bottom arm will be slow to act while turning over; long enough to safely make a run for their opposite side.
