Safely Training Takedowns & Throws
Marcelo sets ups rounds of sparring with one minute first consisting of takedowns only, and the following two minutes afterward are for grounded sparring: If your get behind your partner while you are both standing, never jump low and land on their legs. If your partner gets behind you, don't necessarily trust them to follow said rule; take precaution by dropping your base and sitting low, thereby taking away the possible target space of your legs. If you expose your back for a throw, immediately return your base back to a facing and slightly sprawled away position the moment you realize the technique is unsuccessful. Leaving your legs vulnerable with your back turned after the throwing attempt offers your opponent a chance to jump too low on them. Lastly, don't spike your opponent's head into the mat; keep your head on the inside when finishing a Single. Conversely, don't push your partner's head towards the outside if they are attempting a head-inside single-leg take-down.
